Waterloo is in the Province of Brabant Walloon and has a population of about 29,000. 

The battlefield lies to the south of Waterloo, Wellington established his headquarters at Waterloo itself (now the Musee Wellington) and Napoleon at Le Caillou, a farmhouse to the south. 

The plain of the battlefield is dotted with historic buildings and monuments.
